The Gentle Giant

Reid Landry Garrant born on October 1st 1995, grew up early on in Peabody, MA and later called West Newbury and Merrimac his home. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was handsome, intelligent, funny, generous, loyal, honest, reliable, humble, sincere, kind, loving and compassionate just to name a few of his character traits. He was given the nickname of “Gentle Giant”, by many of his family members when he was just a child, as he had the biggest heart and grew tall and strong very quickly. While playing football at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, MA and later for The University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, MA, Reid was 6’3” and just over 300lbs. “Family, God & Football” was his motto and the closest people around him knew this.   He was the best son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, Godson and friend anyone could ever ask for. Reid was only 22 years old when he was taken from us on June 1st 2018 after being diagnosed with an aggressive and rare type of Leukemia known as APL or APML or Acute Promyeloctic Leukemia. Reid had shown “flu like symptoms” in the week leading up to June 1st and fought with courage and dignity for 18 hours on May 31st 2018. His team of doctors at both Merrimack Valley/Holy Family Hospital’s Emergency Room in Haverhill, MA and Brigham & Women’s Hospital’s Emergency Room/ICU, along with Hematology and Oncology from Dana Farber’s Cancer Institute in Boston, MA worked tirelessly to help stabilize his symptoms. In the end, the Leukemia took hold and would not let go. The mission we are now charged with at The Reid Landry Garrant Foundation is to raise awareness for APML and other blood cancers, but also to work diligently to raise funding for further research and to help other families both pre and post battles with this debilitating disease. Additionally, we will work with the American Red Cross to promote the importance of giving blood and will host blood drives and numerous other fundraising events to honor Reid...our Gentle Giant.
